PowerShell History:

  • PowerShell 1.0 is introduced in 2003.
  • Its initial name is Monad.
  • In November 2006 name changed as PowerShell.
  • PowerShell2.0 is released in 2009. Included support for PowerShell Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • In PowerShell2.0, added hunders of new cmdlets and features.
  • PowerShell3.0 is released in 2012.
  • PowerShell3.0 supports workflow, improved graphical PowerShell tool.
  • PowerShell3.0 improved to tab completion feature.
  • PowerShell4.0 Released in 2103.
  • In PowerShell4.0, Desired State Configuration(DSC) was added. Which manages the deployment and configuration of Windows services and their settings, manages files, directories and registry, stops and starts services, processes. Provides cmdlets to manage user and group accounts. DSC discovers current configuration status and restore configuration. We can deploy new software using DSC.
  • PowerShell5.0 Preview is released in May 2014 as part of Windows Management Framework 5.0.
  • In PowerShell5.0,introduced PowerShellGet which is new way to discover, install and update PowerShell modules.
  • PowerShell5.0 adds NetworkSwitch cmdlets, which has ability to manage network switches.
  • In PowerShell5.0,introduced PowerShellGet which is new way to discover and install software packages from around the web.
